Edinburgh’s Collective arts centre has launched its exhibition Fire on the Mountain, Light on the Hill, by leading visual and performance artist Mercedes Azpilicueta – the first solo show in Scotland for the Amsterdam-based Argentinean artist.
Centred around a giant Jacquard tapestry, Potatoes, Riots and Other Imaginaries (see below), the piece incorporates a soundtrack of whispered gossip and glimpses of songs from social demonstrations, weaving together historic and contemporary themes inspired by Azpilicueta’s research of the 1917 Potato Riots in the Jordaan neighbourhood of Amsterdam, where she is now based. It’s also a homage to the Ni Una Menos grass-roots feminist social movement in her native Argentina.

A newly-commissioned performance will take place on Friday 22nd August, drawing connections between the tapestry’s themes and Collective’s site on Calton Hill, as part of Edinburgh Art Festival’s closing weekend. Entry to the event and the exhibition is free, with no booking required, and refreshments will be available.
