The Scottish Gallery is mounting a major retrospective of painter Alexander Goudie (1933 – 2004). Goudie was one of a group of contemporaries who graduated from Glasgow School of Art in the 1950’s and put extraordinary talent and energy into a variety of major projects, which resulted in Scotland’s art being steered in new directions. Goudie was known for a flamboyant and confrontational personality, and in An Artist’s Life, Act I the focus is on his early life in post-war 1940s Paisley, his student years at Glasgow School of Art the following decade, and his early career, during which he began a personal life-long project, documenting the evolving landscape and culture of his wife’s native Brittany. In a highly-productive career which showcased his exceptional gifts and personal dedication, he earned commissions and patronage from diverse sources, from aristocratic portraits to a commission for a Brittany Ferry, adding up to extraordinary and wide-ranging body of work. A beautifully-illustrated publication accompanies the exhibition, including vintage images of the artist and his family. A programme of events includes an appearance by Goudie’s son, the artist, author and broadcaster, Lachlan, who will offer an insight into life with his father.
