Ingleby Gallery in Edinburgh is set to show Mirror Matter – the first major UK exhibition by Philadelphia-based painter Aubrey Levinthal. Levinthal’s paintings capture passing moments in the lives of a cast of characters in downtown Philadelphia – with the city’s light and colour infused in scumbled greys, characterising the muted, often melancholy tones of her palette, each work offering a glimpse of a passing moment in an unspecified narrative peculiarities of everyday urban lives.

While this combination of intimacy and openness owes something to the likes of Bonnard, Vuillard, Matisse, the works are very much contemporary in character, belonging to the time and place in which they were created – noted by critics for the melancholy, isolated character of scenes we can all relate to.

The show will also be accompanied by a 232-page monograph, published by Ingleby and Anomie, considering Levinthal’s work over the past decade, with texts by Jennifer Higgie and Hettie Judah.

The show forms part of 2025’s Edinburgh Art Festival.
