Burnside gallery & frames in Selkirk is showing a new exhibition that looks at the early 1970s – a pivotal time in art in Scotland and internationally.
The artist Richard Demarco, who went on to become a pre-eminent figure in the Scottish arts, is showing photographs documenting the tempestuous art and music scene in the early ‘70s, alongside music posters by graphic designer Andy Murray: together they recall a period of freedom and revolution in the British arts world.
Burnside gallery & frames was opened in December 2020 by Borders artist / graphic designer Charlotte ‘Charly’ Ternero and photographer / framer Javier Ternero, who specialise in showcasing new and local talent. Charly says, ‘Richard Demarco and Andy Murray felt the same way and did the same thing – Andy was a graphics student from 1972 -1975 in Leeds Polytechnic and the social secretary, so he booked all these up-and-coming bands (including Fleetwood Mac and the Wailers!) and then had to screen print or lithograph a poster each week with his colleagues. Richard Demarco feels strongly that Scotland is European, so he brought over all these up and coming artists and directors from Poland and Germany.’
