A major new UK-wide project by artist Jeremy Deller to celebrate the 200th anniversary of London’s National Gallery will include a Scottish dimension, with a piece devised with students the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design and University of Dundee (DJCAD) in Dundee on 24th May.

Working with Deller, students from DJCAD have created performances, costumes, staging and activities inspired by classical mythology, taking the form of The Revels – a long-established student-led party that used to take place for the people of Dundee.

The Dundee project is titled Meet the Gods and offers a chance to revel collectively with the Roman god Bacchus (god of the arts and protector of the theatre) and his mythical friends. Art students will demonstrate the power of the Art School to produce collective joy, with a showcase bringing the mythical gods from the National Gallery’s painting collection to life, incorporating costumes, performance workshops, a tea party and music.

Events will take place in Dundee City Square and Maryatt Hall – renowned historical landmarks and cultural cornerstones of Dundee, known for their connections to celebration and demonstration, the perfect location for artistic revelry.

The event forms part of Jeremy Deller’s The Triumph of Art project, which rounds-off the bicentennial year of London’s National Gallery with pieces in Dundee, Derry-Londonderry, Plymouth and Llandudno. It is free to attend and will be family-friendly.
