Lizzie Siddal, as she was better known, was the model who posed for John Everett Millais’ painting Ophelia. Wife of the leading Pre-Raphaelite artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti (he coined the term “stunner” to describe her), her flaming red hair became an icon of the movement. Finally, Elizabeth Eleanor Rossetti is now recognised as an artist in her own right, her truly original designs embodying the essence of Pre-Raphaelitism that her husband and other male members of the circle were striving to achieve. They shamelessly copied ideas from Elizabeth’s small sketches to create their own large masterpieces, which have since become the epitome of the genre, creating a perception of the Pre-Raphaelites as a male movement. This book reveals Elizabeth as the initiator of a directional change in its development.
